Above The Fold: What Needs To Be On Screen In The First 5 Seconds

You have roughly five seconds before a visitor decides to stay or leave. That decision is made entirely by what they see without scrolling. Here's what needs to be there — and what needs to go.

The 5-Second Hierarchy

When a visitor lands on your page, their eyes scan in a predictable pattern. Eye-tracking studies consistently show the same F-pattern or Z-pattern across thousands of sites. The elements above the fold need to answer three questions instantly:

  • "What is this?" — Your headline. One sentence. No jargon. If they can't tell what you do in 3 seconds, they leave.
  • "Is this for me?" — Your subheadline. Speak to their problem, not your solution. "Tired of wasting money on ads that don't convert?" beats "Full-service digital marketing agency" every time.
  • "What do I do next?" — Your CTA. Visible, specific, and low-friction. "Get Your Free Audit" beats "Submit" by 40% on average across our clients.

The 6 Required Elements

After analyzing conversion rates across 150+ client landing pages, we've identified the six elements that must be above the fold on every high-performing page:

  • Logo + minimal navigation — Establishes credibility instantly. Keep nav items to 7 or fewer.
  • Problem-aware headline — Not what you do. What you fix. Frame it around their pain.
  • Supporting subheadline — One sentence of proof or specificity. Include a number if you can.
  • Primary CTA button — High contrast, action-oriented. "Get" and "Start" outperform "Learn" and "Submit."
  • Trust signal — One trust element: star rating, client count, years in business, or a recognizable logo strip.
  • Relevant visual — A hero image or video that reinforces the message. Avoid generic stock photos of people shaking hands.
Every element below the fold is betting that the user will scroll. Every element above the fold is a certainty they'll see it. Bet accordingly.

What To Remove

Above-the-fold space is the most expensive real estate on your site. Every pixel counts. Here's what we remove from client sites on day one:

  • Sliders and carousels — Less than 1% of users click past the first slide. They dilute your message and slow load time.
  • Chat widgets on load — They obscure the CTA on mobile. Trigger them after 30 seconds or on exit intent instead.
  • Cookie banners that cover content — Use a slim top bar, not a modal that hides 30% of the viewport.
  • Welcome mats and pop-ups — Immediate pop-ups have been shown to increase bounce rate by 10–20% across our client data.

Mobile Is A Different Fold

The fold on a 1440px desktop monitor is in a completely different place than on a 390px iPhone. You need to design for both independently. On mobile, the fold is typically around 500–600px from the top — that's your headline, maybe one line of supporting text, and a CTA. That's it. No room for hero images, feature grids, or long-form copy above the fold on mobile.

Test It With The 5-Second Rule

Here's a test we run with every client: show your homepage to someone who has never seen it for exactly 5 seconds, then close it. Ask them three questions: What does this company do? Who is it for? What should you do next? If they can't answer all three, your above-the-fold content needs work.
